Emma noticed she felt quite uncomfortable at the bouldering wall as an average female climber. She wanted to do something about it. So one day she turned up wearing a t-shirt with the word ‘COACH’ written on the in big bold letters (to draw attention and raise other people’s expectations of her climbing) and then went round trying problems too hard for her in front of all the people that intimidated her most. What happened? Others noticed her trying hard and cheered her on. To me, this story is the definition of empowerment. We never get more comfortable with things by avoiding them, whether that’s falling or social-fears. I think this is such a good example of someone intentionally leaving their comfort zone with style and courage. . .
