One thing I’ve been working on alongside getting stronger is the use of breath. I’ve always used breath in climbing but mostly as a mental management tool.
.
.
I’ve been aware of my breath on hard moves and sometimes timed my breath with certain moves. However, utilising the breath for making hard moves easier is not something I’ve spent much time practicing. I know that people suggest breathing out for hard moves or even holding the breath and then breathing in at more restful points. However what I’ve found so far is that I end up breaking these suggestions just as often as I follow them. Sometimes the moments I need to maintain most tension are keeping my feet on or moving my feet. Therefore if I held my breath for the hard move and the following foot move I would go too long without breathing. I think that much of hard climbing is about how to manage moving between states of tension and comparative relaxation and using the breath to aid this seems like something worth practicing. I guess I should also say that we don’t know what we’re doing with our breath until we direct our attention towards it.

If you don’t have a board you can still work on breath during the lock down if you’re interested. If you are doing pull-ups you could experiment with breathing in at different points and then breathing out at different points of the rep. Or the same with press-ups or core workouts. Let me know what you find out! @blackdiamond @seatosummitgear @motionnutrition @lasportivagram
