Since being in Yosemite Valley we’ve been working on El Niño via the Pineapple Express variation - a 26 pitch, 5.13 free route up 1000m-high El Capitan. The first few pitches are some of the hardest on the route, so we’ve practised them and we’ve also pre-hauled 7-days worth of supplies part way up the wall. It’s hard to explain how challenging free climbing (or even just climbing) El Cap is. If you drop your focus for a minute, it won’t happen. And that’s not just when you’re climbing, but also when planning, preparing and resting. Pretty much the whole period of time from when you pick the goal to the moment you complete it, you need to be on top of things. Small things like having bad skin, the wrong shoes, not eating or drinking enough, climbing in poor conditions… all these things matter and could make the difference between success and failure. And there aren’t really second chances. When a climb takes 7 days and most of your trip’s energy to complete, it’s unlikely that you’ll return until next season (if at all). All that to say that it’s a real mental challenge to stay on top of all that and also take things lightly enough to have fun and stay relaxed enough to climb well. But with all big challenges there’s a lot to learn and a lot to enjoy (even 5th time around). Photo @anguskille @blackdiamond @lasportivana @lasportivagram」11月6日 7時40分 - hazel_findlay
