I think there are some misconceptions around flow that make it seem unattainable and therefore uninteresting or uninspiring to some people. When people are new to flow there can be this idea that if we don’t find flow then we’ve failed. But I like to think about the psychological states of performance as being on a scale from distraction to flow with states like presence and focus in between. Check out the state scale on the next slide taken from our online course Performance Hacks. Mental training is about trying to move along that scale towards flow. Even if we’re not hitting these super memorable intense flow states we might be more focused than we would be otherwise and that’s really valuable. The skills and knowledge we learn from trying to move along that scale apply to the rest of life too!
