Pictured here are the Underground sheets for Australia (left) and the UK. Underground was the final track on the Labyrinth soundtrack album, and it played over the closing credits of the film. Regarding the gospel flavour of the song, Bowie explained: “The film essentially deals with a girl’s emotions and what she’s going through, discovering about herself and her parents and her relationship to her family. So I wanted something very emotional, and for me the most emotional music I can think of is gospel.” To achieve that feel, the track included an impressive chorus of backing vocalists, including Cissy Houston, Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, Fonzi Thorton, Marcus Miller, Marc Stevens, Daphne Vega, Garcia Alston, Mary Davis Canty, Beverly Ferguson, A. Marie Foster, James Glenn, Eunice Peterson and Rennele Stafford. Lead guitar was played by blues legend Albert Collins, whose contribution to the song was described by Bowie as “a very savage, rough, aggressive sound which goes against some of the maybe superficial slickness of the synthesizers.” Bowie recorded Underground with co-producer Arif Mardin at Atlantic Studios in New York and despite only reaching #21 in the UK, the single was a Top 10 hit in many other European countries, but its highest position was Down Under where it reached #6. * Apologies for today’s lyric interference, couldn’t resist. #DailyBowieThing #BowieSheetMusicSunday #BowieLabyrinth #BowieUnderground」12月7日 0時42分
