This release featured seven remixes from various artists with additional production and mixing by Rusty Garner and Paul Sabu. All sound familiar? DAILY BOWIE THING – Day 31

“We can't dance, we don't talk much, we just ball and play...”

Had original plans for this record been realised, it would have no doubt been sitting at #1 in the album chart thirty-five years ago this week.

Those of you who purchased Parlophone’s Loving The Alien box set in 2018 will be familiar with their reproduction of the Dance sleeve, featuring Denis O’Regan’s 1983 shot of Bowie in Hong Kong, and as you can see from our montage, it was an image also used on the cover of YOU in 1984.

However, the music on the Parlophone version was a different 12-track compilation of previously released remixes from the period. The original sleeve for Dance had been approved, but for one reason or another, the audio was not.

Dance was a seven-track remix LP originally scheduled for release in November 1985. Described as ‘An Endless Music Mix’, the album collected several of Bowie's recent remixes from Let’s Dance and Tonight. The tracks were seamlessly segued together with unique snatches of music not on the original versions.

The allocated catalogue number was EMI America ST-17175 and the total running time was 37:30. See montage for tracklisting.

With additional production and mixing by Rusty Garner and Paul Sabu, it seems Rusty Garner had his vision partly realised (apparently the concept was his), with the album Dance Mix (EYS-91132 EMI America ST-17170) released in 1985 too and also subtitled: ‘An Endless Music Mix’. This release featured seven remixes from various artists with additional production and mixing by Rusty Garner and Paul Sabu. All sound familiar? The album was withdrawn from schedule before any vinyl was pressed, and the sleeves were destroyed. But not before a handful of untrimmed proofs were squirrelled away by some resourceful employee.

Beware of a nine-track bootleg CD released in 2001 which utilised the withdrawn sleeve and features officially released remixes from the period.
