Most of my experience of snow was from walking to school as a kid in the few winters when the temperature in Wales dropped low enough for snow to stick. I slipped around in the plastic bags in my trainers and we used rocks in our hands as ice axes. We jumped over crevasses and we climbed the Becky Chouinard in 2 pitches. . . This day was on the edge of being too challenging. It ended well, but it might not have. Looking bad we were probably a bit cocky. (I think this might be Tim’s middle name). Getting the challenge level right is the most important part of improving your climbing and so many climbers don’t think about it. You can’t learn or grow without challenge but too much challenge leads to stress and even trauma. Many people I coach are either over or under challenged and as a result their comfort zones shrink, they plateau or give up. If you want to hear more about this I’m talking about mindset on Sunday.
