This frightful creature from the @SmithsonianNMNH collections is definitely scary enough for our #SeaMonstersUnearthed takeover.
The black dragonfish (Idiacanthus atlanticus) is covered in scales so dark that they are now believed to be the darkest pigment known.
This pigment is the secret to its underwater invisibility at depths where sunlight does not reach. Any light that hits the scales is immediately absorbed, a quality that makes the fish look like nothing but a shadow of darkness in an abyss of black.
