Back before the @airandspacemuseum was built, there was “Rocket Row” at our Arts and Industries Building. During the space race, the rockets became a landmark on the National Mall.
From left to right, they are the U.S. Army Jupiter-C satellite launcher (which launched Explorer I, the first U.S. satellite), the U.S. Navy Vanguard satellite launcher, the U.S. Navy Polaris A-1 missile (the first U.S. submarine-launched ICBM) and the Atlas Mercury launch vehicle.
This 1960s photo is in @smithsonianarchives. #FlashbackFriday
