The next ocean creature on @SmithsonianNMNH’s weeklong takeover is an ammonite. These formidable creatures reigned as top predators in ancient seas 400 to 66 million years ago, though today only their spiraled shells remain.
Ancestors of today’s squids and octopuses, some were as small as a thumbnail while the largest measured over 8 feet in diameter, taller than most humans! With long, dexterous arms they could easily ensnare prey, and their curled shell allowed them to control their buoyancy in order to survey the scene from up above.
