In the spirit of the season and to celebrate the opening of #SeaMonstersUnearthed on Nov. 9, @SmithsonianNMNH and the museum’s ocean education website the Ocean Portal are taking over this account to share some of the bizarre and seemingly fantastical creatures of the sea. Though not exactly monsters, they certainly create a fright!
The seas during the Cambrian Period roughly 540 to 485 million years ago were full of bottom-dwelling critters no bigger than a few inches. So at 3 feet in length, the Anomalocaris was quite the terror.
With acute eyesight, an undulating body built for swimming and two spiked appendages emerging from its head, the sea creature surveyed the ocean floor before plucking its meal.
