Our final creature this week is the mosasaur, the star of the upcoming @Smithsoniannmnh #SeaMonstersUnearthed exhibit. With sharp conical teeth, this mosasaur (Prognathodon kianda) had quite the bite!
A group of marine lizards, mosasaurs roamed the seas when dinosaurs reigned on land.
With powerful front flippers and a tail fluke built for thrust, mosasaurs were cunning predators, akin to the orcas of today. Some had razor-like teeth used to slash and tear chunks of flesh from large prey (even other mosasaurs), while specialized blunt and bulbous teeth were used to grind and crush shellfish.
In the new exhibit you will find a fossil P. kianda with three fossilized skulls in its belly. One of those skulls is from another P. kianda, evidence that mosasaurs partook in cannibalism.
Want to see more sea monsters? Keep following us after this week at @SmithsonianNMNH and visit the museum starting Nov. 9 to meet them in person. ?: Hillsman S. Jackson, Southern Methodist University
