Over the past four years I’ve been working on a collecting initiative and upcoming exhibit about Latinos and baseball (opening April 2020). We’ve collected more than 100 objects from 14 states and Puerto Rico. At one of our first community events in Los Angeles we met members of the Martinez family, whose family story highlights how baseball is at the heart of many Latino communities: The father played baseball in the Mexican National League, and clubs in California and Texas, and seven children also played the game. They donated this handmade bat and re-stitched glove, examples of how many Latino families of modest means make do with what they have, to create unique and sometimes beautiful equipment.
