Before picking up a paintbrush, he spent months at the 135th Street Branch of the New York Public Library (now NYPL’s @schomburgcenter) studying historical documents. The resulting work, “The Migration Series” (1940–41), is a landmark in the history of modern art and a key example of the way that history painting was radically reimagined in the modern era.
