This amphipod crustacean, a Phronima, uses its pincer-like legs to cling to the gelatinous bodies of its prey, the salp.
After consuming the innards of a salp—a small, jelly-like creature—the Phronima will bury its body into the vacated space and lay their eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the tiny Phronimas burst out.
Though never confirmed, the uncanny similarity between the Phronima and the queen in Ridley Scott’s film “Alien” has prompted many enthusiasts to suggest that inspiration came from this tiny mid-water creature. This Phronima photographed by @Smithsoniannmnh curator Karen Osborn does look like something out of this world! #SeaMonstersUnearthed
