This Statue of Liberty was made by artist and activist, Kat Rodriguez, for the Coalition of Immokalee Workers’ 230-mile march for Dignity, Dialogue and a Fair Wage in Florida, in 2000. While doing research for our “Many Voices, One Nation” exhibition, I learned about the fantastic story behind the object. Painted to resemble the bronze skin tones of many agricultural workers, it alludes to liberty at the same time as it brings visibility to the backbreaking work of farm workers.
