This winter scene shows mist floating gently above the piercingly blue Lake Fudoike, a volcanic lake in the Ebino Highland in Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park, complemented by the frost-covered trees and shore. Snow rarely falls at the base of the nearby mountains, but the Ebino Plateau rests 1,200 meters (about 3,937 feet) above sea level, which creates the perfect conditions for a snowscape such as this even in the mild climate of southern Kyushu.
