As strange as it may seem, these are the Tottori Sand Dunes in winter, as evidenced by the sand peeking out from under the ice and snow. Stretching an expansive 16 kilometers from east to west (nearly 10 miles) and almost 2.5 kilometers from north to south (about 1.5 miles), the Tottori Sand Dunes are one of the largest in all Japan. The sun shines brightly off the snow, creating an exhilarating, almost otherworldly effect for hikers seeking a brisk stroll through the dunes and along the nearby coast in San’in Kaigan National Park.
