This is the southern slope of Mt. Takada-Odake, part of the Hakkoda Mountains, in Towada-Hachimantai National Park. At an impressive 1,552 meters (about 5092 feet!), Mt. Takada-Odake is the second tallest peak of the Hakkoda Mountains after Mt. Odake, which stands just 33 meters (about 108 feet) taller. Strong westerly winds buffet the mountains, creating impressive wind-swept patterns as the snow piles up in winter. These wave-like patterns are an iconic characteristic of the Hakkoda Mountains, as well as its striking frost-covered trees called ‘juhyo.’
