Today in #JazzHistory: American jazz musician Herbie Hancock is born. As a pianist, composer, band leader, educator, and cultural ambassador, Hancock’s career has spanned over 60 years. As a band member, Hancock played with notable jazz musicians such as Donald Byrd, Coleman Hawkins, Mongo Santamaria, Miles Davis, and eventually formed his own groups.

This Fairlight CMI Synthesizer belonged to Hancock, which he used to compose the 1983 song “Rockit.” These keyboards held a library of sound samples and were used for sampling, a growing technique used in the early 1980’s among musicians.
