After helping secure the 19th Amendment in 1920, Paul quickly transitioned to writing and lobbying for the ERA that would guarantee equal rights for all Americans, regardless of sex. Later in 1972, she created four charm bracelets – one pictured here – when Congress passed the ERA and sent it to the states for ratification. Paul tracked victories with charms engraved with the date a state voted for ratification. Alice Paul died on July 9, 1977, at the age of 92. She would never know that the amendment for which she had fought so long and hard would not be ratified. The ERA failed to meet the required number of state ratifications (only obtaining 35 of the necessary 38) by Congress’ deadline of June 30, 1982.
