On this day in 1913, thousands marched in the Woman Suffrage Procession in Washington, D.C. Among those thousands were Black women advocates for voting rights, who had been asked by parade organizers to march in a segregated section in the back. Some Black women, like Ida B. Wells-Barnett, decided not to march in the segregated section. Wells-Barnett instead walked alongside the all-white delegation from her home state, Illinois.

How else were Black women involved in the fight for the vote? What made their struggle different from the challenges facing white women? Watch our new video to learn more about the stories that aren’t always included in suffrage narratives.

This project was made possible by the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative. #BecauseOfHerStory #WomensHistoryMonth
