Mayra Stefania Arteaga works to protect residents of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, from criminalization and deportation. Mayra Stefania's advocacy work was shaped by 287g—a small clause in the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act that permits sheriffs to notify Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) whenever they detain a person. In many places, 287g means that a random traffic stop, a broken taillight, jaywalking, or simply looking “Latino” can trigger a deportation pipeline—regardless of whether a person has broken the law.

In 2018 Mayra Stefania successfully organized to defeat 287g in her county by leading Comunidad Colectiva, a North Carolina-based immigrants' rights group, to swing a local sheriff’s election. This was no small feat. After all, Mayra Stefania and many other members of the group are not citizens and do not have the right to vote. Yet through multiracial coalition-building with suburban voters, they gathered enough votes to push a pro-287(g) sheriff out of office. Their bold campaign garnered national attention and established a template for other local elections in states as far away as Arizona.

Like Cominidad Colectiva, many undocumented-led organizations have recently adjusted their focus, moving away from national politics and turning instead to local issues impacting the daily lives of friends and neighbors. Today they work to secure basic freedoms for undocumented people, specifically the right to live without the constant fear of incarceration, deportation, family separation, and the destruction of their communities.

Mayra Stephania Arteaga’s interview is featured in our Tell Me What Democracy Looks Like series, part of the museum's ongoing Undocumented Organizing Collecting Initiative.
