For 11 years during and after World War II, professional baseball was a women's sport. Chicago Cubs owner and chewing gum mogul Philip K. Wrigley began the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League to continue to profit from the sport while most men served in the military. Playing in the league, Villa set records for RBIs (runs batted in) and total bases in the game.
