Found throughout Africa and on the island of Madagascar, marsh owls are not considered at risk of extinction due to their extremely large range. However, because this species builds their nests on the ground, marsh owls are vulnerable to a number of threats very early on in life. Eggs incubate on the ground for almost a month, and after hatching, chicks remain in the nest for an additional 18 days. During this time, livestock grazing and harvesting activities could cause harm to both eggs and chicks, as well as dry season fires, flooding, and predation by animals like mongooses.
