The snakelocks anemone is found in shallow water throughout the Mediterranean Sea and north along Portugal, Spain, and France to the southern and western coasts of Great Britain. The unique green coloration of this species’ tentacles is due to a photosynthetic algae growing in the tentacles' tissues. Because of the algae’s need for sunlight, the snakelocks anemone rarely retracts its tentacles, even if left on land after high tide.
