To start, their segmented hide looks a lot like a formidable coat of body armor. Despite their bulkiness, this species can move quite quickly, clocking speeds of up to 30 miles an hour. While other rhino species have two horns, Indian rhinos have only one, as their Latin name Rhinoceros unicornis suggests. The prominent horn for which these rhinos are so well known has also been their downfall, as has been the case for many of the Indian rhino’s relatives. Many animals have been killed for this hard, hair-like growth, which is highly sought after in the false belief it has healing powers. The horn is also valued in North Africa and the Middle East as an ornamental dagger handle. Photo taken @fortworthzoo. This December, we’re counting down to the anniversary of the Endangered Species Act on December 28th. Each day, we’ll feature a different species protected by this act so you can learn more about their stories. #rhino #rhinoceros #animal #mammal #wildlife #photography #animalphotography #wildlifephotography #studioportrait #PhotoArk #HopeForSpecies @insidenatgeo」12月19日 0時30分 - joelsartore
