In 1984, the first national recovery plan for a single species in Australia was put in place for the orange-bellied parrot. A captive breeding program has had success releasing these birds back into their native habitat, but to date, this parrot remains one of Australia’s most threatened species with less than 50 individuals estimated in the wild. Like many bird species, they are threatened by collisions with man-made structures, habitat loss, the spread of invasive plant species, and predation by cats and foxes.
