Wildlife veterinarians from @スミソニアン国立動物園 are trying to learn more about bat health and how it can affect human health, which means they need to collect DNA samples from lots of bats.
They have collected samples from more than 600 bats, totaling between 5,000 and 6,000 DNA samples. From those samples they have identified a completely new coronavirus, and a coronavirus that had only been found in bats in Thailand before.
There is no evidence that either virus poses a threat to human health, but scientists will continue to study them to better understand their risk. #BatWeek
