The sun is setting on #WorldArchitectureDay and the Smithsonian Institution Building, aka the Castle.
A 28-year-old architect named James Renwick, Jr. won the competition to design the Smithsonian's first building, which was finished in 1855.
But it wasn't supposed to be a castle. Its appearance was meant to imitate British institutions of higher learning like Oxford and Cambridge, as a way to connect the Smithsonian (and America) to a history of western culture.
The building was designed in a combination of late Romanesque and early Gothic motifs from the 12th century.
