Nope, this isn’t an alien landscape! It’s actually iron ore from Mount Whaleback mine in Western Australia. This ore naturally occurs in banded formations, which show up as colorful alternating layers of mineral deposits. Artist and author Benjamin Grant calls the mine "a beautiful yet scary scar on the face of the Earth." His website Daily Overview (@Daily Overview) combs through a massive archive of images from 5 satellites orbiting the globe, zooming in on the places where humans have had the most (and the worst) impact. In his talk, he shares how the "overview effect" — a supposed cognitive shift that astronauts experience after seeing the Earth from space — works and why he wants to deliver that same feeling to his audience. "If we can adopt a more expansive perspective, embrace the truth of what is going on and contemplate the long-term health of our planet, we will create a better, safer and smarter future for our one and only home," he explains.
