When Danielle Torley was 6 years old, she lost her mother in a house fire, an event that left her haunted by fear. After years of nightmares and grief, she encountered someone who would change her life forever — a fire dancer. She wondered: Could she face her fears head-on and dance with fire herself? Torley says that after experiencing a trauma or hardship, we must choose between two paths. "One path will lead you to a life of fear and cowering in the darkness," she explains. "The other path, stepping out of grief, will not change or undo anything. It will be hard, but this path looks forward and moves forward." By learning to dance with fire, she learned to control the flames that once terrified her — and found a sense of empowerment.
