Have you ever experienced the cuteness of the salamander known as an axolotl? In order to save a rare relative of the axolotl — the achoque, which is found only in a lake in northern Mexico — scientists teamed up with some unexpected research partners: Local nuns. For centuries, the Sisters of the Immaculate Health have used these amphibians to make medicine, citing their regenerative abilities (like growing back lost limbs!). In her TED Talk, science journalist Victoria Gill shares the story of this unusual collaboration and explains why Indigenous and local communities could be the key to saving some of the world's species from extinction.
