DAILY BOWIE THING – Day 59

“Who will love Aladdin Sane?”

We do realise that it’s not #BowieMagMonday, but we thought we would try a new thing today, with #TheBiggerBowiePicture.

You’ve no doubt worked it out before we’ve even explained, but the idea is that we take a well-known Bowie photograph and reveal the full image it was cropped from.

As we mentioned with our Time Out piece last week (Day 51), Bowie was the most frequent cover star of many magazines and NME was no exception.

This one from 1974 is the February 23 issue, which was a poll results special. The lady with David in Joe Stevens’ original shot is Dana (rhymes with spanner) Gillespie. They are pictured during the Pin Ups recording session at The Château d'Hérouville in France. Dana was a friend of David’s since the mid-60s and was also a Mainman stablemate at the time.

Bowie purportedly wrote Andy Warhol for Dana and though they both recorded the track in 1971, the Hunky Dory version preceded her version, which was eventually released on the 1973 album, Weren't Born a Man.

For those wondering about today’s lyric quotation, here are some of the more relevant poll results from this issue…
