DAILY BOWIE THING – Day 54

“Scanning life through the picture window...”

Back in the summer of 1972, colour features on David Bowie weren’t common. But, as we said very recently, @therealmickrock was a man whose words and images were important in the early development of Bowie’s publicity machine.

Best known for his breathtakingly beautiful photographs of Bowie, you’ll also find Mick Rock as the byline to many early Bowie articles after their first meeting at Birmingham Town Hall in March 1972, when Mick photographed David in performance for the very first time.

Following the show, Mick went back with David to Beckenham, chatting with him and interviewing him till the early hours of the next day.

As you might expect from a man graduating with a degree in Medieval and Modern Languages from Cambridge, Rock was a brilliant writer and a career in journalism would have been guaranteed if the lure of the lens hadn't pulled him in a different direction.

The 3-page article here was published in the pages of Club International (not sure what kind of mag it was...honest guv), the first ever feature to include colour pictures and an interview all provided by Mick.

Not sure that the live pic on the left-hand page was ever published elsewhere, including by Mick Rock in any of the various books of Bowie pictures he authored. It wasn't unknown for photographers back then to send original pictures rather than duplicates to be published in magazines. Mick lost more than one picture this way.

This issue of Club International isn't easy to find these days. But, if you're on the lookout for it, it was Volume #1, issue #2, from August 1972, though it was probably on sale in July.

FOOTNOTE: We may take a break from #DailyBowieThing for a couple of days, either way, see you again very soon.
