Normally I would have edited out the first try, but this time I decided to leave it in because well, it’s honest practice. There are enough videos out there that show perfection. Seeing these “perfect” videos creates a huge pressure on yourself to be “perfect” too. But neither life, nor practice is perfect. Practice is an accumulation of small steps forward amidst a sea of failures, tumbles and falls. The inner work is what matters, but that can be hard to show in a picture or photo. The more we yogis share the honest experience of practice the more we normalize the truth. It is said that the ancient spiritual teachers taught most by sharing their presence than by anything else. We can all study books and memorize things, but who we are and how we show up in the world is where the practice really shows up. I am more interested in what attitude you have when you fall than in the peaks and highs of your experience. I am more interested in how someone shows up on their mat when no one is watching than in the fancy tricks they can do. I am more interested in how we treat each other than all the mental games we play. Yoga cultivates a heart of love. That’s the real benefit of many years of practice—deep, unfiltered, open, unconditional love.
