Most ocean life is hidden from our view because light waves can’t penetrate very far beneath the surface. But sound waves travel farther and faster in water than on land—making sonar a powerful tool for exploring ocean life. Experts said it couldn’t be done, but in order to study beaked whales, scientist Kelly Benoit-Bird and team tinkered with a small, self-piloting submarine equipped with elaborate acoustic equipment. The team called their yellow vessel DOR-E (Deep Ocean Remus-Echosounder)—“because she speaks whale,” like her animated counterpart. Learn how at our new exhibition #UnseenOceans, now open to the public!
