One of the strongest known biological materials comes from an eight-legged critter found in the tropical rainforests of Madagascar. Darwin’s bark spider (Caerostris darwini) spins silk that can absorb extensive amounts of energy before breaking—10 times more than Kevlar—and demonstrates an incredible combination of strength and elasticity. Darwin’s bark spiders create extensive webs that span rivers, streams, and lakes, entangling bees and dragonflies. This species also builds some of the largest and longest webs—one recorded had an area of about 30 square feet!
