Look a little closer… Do you see the unusual canine teeth of the Chinese water deer (Hydropotes inermis)? Rather than having antlers like most other deer species, males have long canine teeth that look like fangs! Besides adding some flair to their appearance, these curved tusks come in handy as weapons against rival bucks while defending territory. Females have them too, but they’re much smaller and less visible: does’ canines grow to about half a centimeter in length, while bucks sport canines that grow to more than 5 centimeters.
