The mandarinfish (Siniperca splendidus), also known as the mandarin dragonet, is a fish with no scales! Instead, it has a thick coating of foul-smelling, bitter tasting mucus. Together with its bright colors, this malodorous mucus is thought to deter predators by signalling toxicity. This species is also one of very few vertebrates with a blue hue produced by cellular pigment, rather than as a result of structural coloration.
