Confused? Don’t be—you’re looking at this photo the right way. The white-breasted nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) uses its sharp hind toes to effortlessly hang out on tree branches, whether that be right side up or upside down. These clever birds get their name from using their bills to “hack” into nuts or seeds, which they wedge into small cracks to extract what’s inside. In addition to seeds, white-breasted nuthatches snack on spiders and insects—their diet depends on whatever is more available during the season.
