The tulou houses of Fujian province, essentially these are fortified villages that are still home to many communities with some of them over 700 years old. They with an average of 36 families per tulou and are now a Unesco World Heritage site set in the beautiful countryside of Fujian province, southeast China. Built by the Hakka people, tulou 土楼 literally “earth buildings” were historically made from compacted earth around a central courtyard and shrine. Some attract mass tourism and the locals are happy to accommodate with gifts, snacks and tours, where others are sleepy and quiet with only residents allowed in. The most recent was completed in the 1960s and conservation work continues to bring those neglected back into use. Lovely to go through some old footage and drone video to piece together a sort of day in the life of people going about their daily business.
