On a street in Guangzhou, a shop makes deliciously smooth sesame soup, ground by hand with an enormously phallic, wobbly wooden pestle. Something about the wobble makes me smile with a childish grin. Despite the rather sombre colour, it’s wildly delicious. The recipe is simple, toasted black sesame seeds, water to dilute and sugar to taste. It’s an easy sweet treat enjoyed all day from nine in the morning until almost midnight. Black sesame has many medicinal properties in TCM too, from preventing hair loss, dizziness, impaired vision, constipation and even tinnitus. The shop also sells freshly milled almond, peanut and sesame flours to take home
