As far as we are aware (and you may know better), the first organisation to receive official management backing was The David Bowie Appreciation Society out of Aylesbury in the UK. First run by Hilda Williams as Bowie’s Starman was in the ascendancy, the appreciation society morphed into the David Bowie Fan Club and became London based with Sue Townsend at the helm. In 1974 operations moved to New York and the club went through several incarnations until its eventual demise in 1979. During this period there were other unofficial clubs around the globe doing a jolly good job too. Michael Olsen ran his own service before he became president of the official fan club in the US for a time. The subject of today’s #DailyBowieThing is the last official newsletter dated 1979 (though clearly written at the tail end of 1978), which announced the closure of the club with a message from David suggesting fans started their own outfits. By this point there were already several unofficial ‘fan clubs’ offering news services and photos, posters and memorabilia to fans. The more notable among them were the excellent Bowie Bureau, started by Rita and Gill in January 1977 from the Isle Of Wight and two other UK outfits in the shape of Subterraneans and Big Brother. After the closure of the official club in 1979, lots of fanzines were started, most notably Starzone, and by the time of the global success of Let’s Dance many more had launched. There has been a great run of publications since, most recently David Bowie: Glamour.
