Tens of thousands of paintings by early humans have been discovered on a cliffside in the Amazon rainforest! Dating back 12,500 years, these astonishing images — along with other rock art in the area — are being called the "Sistine Chapel of the ancients." Archaeologists Gaspar Morcote-Ríos, Francisco Javier Aceituno, José Iriarte, Mark Robinson and Jeison L. Chaparro-Cárdenas trekked deep into the remote jungles of Serrania de la Lindosa in Colombia to find these depictions of large Ice Age mammals such as giant sloths and mastodons. It's "further evidence that the Amazon’s earliest human inhabitants lived alongside these now extinct giant animals," says TED speaker and paleoanthropologist Ella Al-Shamahi (@littlemsfossil). She was one of the lucky few allowed access to the site while working on UK's Channel 4 docuseries Jungle Mystery: Lost Kingdoms of the Amazon.
