DAILY BOWIE THING – Day 15

“I know that people think, That I'm a little crazy...”

For #BowieSheetMusicSunday we have the striking 1975 US Fascination sheet. Aside from being a superb song, the composition is also notable for being the first published credit (shared with Bowie), for one Luther Vandross, who also sang backing vocals on the Young Americans album, where it appeared.

Weird one this, though rumoured to have been considered for a single, it was never released by Bowie as one. The same Steve Schapiro image was used for the cover of Cash Box in September 1975 and the “FASCINATION it’s what made Bowie famous” campaign in the music press (again utilising the same Schapiro image), ran 45 years ago this week.

The FASCINATION music press ads promoted the back catalogue and the upcoming appearance with Cher on her CBS TV show on Sunday, 23rd November, 1975. The same adverts were printed as flyers and slipped inside copies of Young Americans for the promotion.

Another theory is that the sheet music was produced to coincide with the release of the Fat Larry’s Band version of Fascination. This is highly unlikely as cover versions featured the artist who had released the song on the cover of the sheet, as was the case for Bowie’s versions of both Sorrow and Wild Is The Wind.

A note of caution for any of you thinking of collecting single sheet music, always check with the seller that all the pages are present and correct, as there were often 2 or 3 numbered loose pages along with the outer cover.

We’ll be back with another #DailyBowieThing tomorrow.
