"George Floyd, forty-six, Black, was, on Monday, May 25th, 2020, murdered by Derek Chauvin, forty-four, white, a former Minneapolis Police Officer. The alleged use of a counterfeit bill fueled the arrest, and, quite shockingly but historically unsurprisingly, George Floyd, handcuffed, lying facedown, found himself trapped underneath the weight of Chauvin’s knee. For nearly nine minutes—eight minutes and forty-six seconds, to be exact—Mr. Floyd, driven by sudden, inexplicable terror, with as much strength as conceivably possible, begged for his life—'I can’t breathe!'—and, finally, evaded by hope, cried out to his mother.

He was trapped, a child, enveloped in fear and desperation, from which rescue was singularly bound in his mother’s protection—deceased as she may be—she was, no doubt, in the face of everything, and within the cascade of unfathomable moments, his absolute best hope.

Hope, ultimately, was defeated. Mr. Floyd was further restrained by two officers. A fourth officer prevented local residents, along with their collective pleading for mercy, from intervening and helping Mr. Floyd, who, for the final three minutes, had no pulse—motionless—and Chauvin, hand in pocket, deeply more committed to his allegiance to racism and hatred rather than his health in the midst of a global Coronavirus Pandemic, ignored such pleas of mercy, only removing his knee upon the arrival and direction of medics.

As a Black man in America, no matter my status or disposition, George Floyd’s story could have been my story, and I, too, would have been screaming out for my mother’s protection and refuge. The truth of the matter is that, at any given point or time, such a tragic end could, no doubt, come to me, simply based on the color of my skin.

In effect, George Floyd’s story is my story."
