The idea for "Tractor" struck Charles Ray when he came across a 1938 tractor in a backyard in San Fernando Valley. Left to rust, the abandoned tractor had become a playground for local children. Ray dragged the metal carcass back to his studio and took it apart—piece by piece. Ray recreated each of the tractor’s thousands of gears, springs, and components by hand, taking molds from the constituents and making wax versions, before casting each element in aluminum and reassembling into a gleaming whole. Through this painstaking process, Ray adds to the enigmatic feeling that "Tractor" is both a handmade and industrial object.
