In "Hineni (E. 3:4)," shown here, artist Julie Mehretu explores the contradictory meanings of fire. "Hineni" translates to "here I am" in Hebrew, referencing the response of the biblical prophet Moses to Yahweh (God), who called his name from within the burning bush. Meanwhile, its base imagery is taken from the 2017 northern California wildfires. Its story is of the intentional burning of Rohingya homes in Myanmar as a part of a campaign of ethnic cleansing.

By juxtaposing three types of fires in this painting, one environmental, one intentional, one prophetic, Mehretu explores the contradictory meanings of a single elemental force. See "Hineni (E, 3:4)" on view in "Julie Mehretu," now at LACMA.
