If you were out for a nighttime prowl in nineteenth-century Paris, you may have found yourself walking through the doors of Le Chat Noir ("The Black Cat"). 🐾

Thought to be the first modern cabaret, Le Chat Noir is arguably best remembered by Théophile Steinlen's iconic poster for the venue, and one of the most evocative images of Parisian nightlife. While the stoic, sable specimen shown here is his most famous feline, Steinlen was a lover of cats and included them in many of his drawings, paintings, and sculptures.

Swipe ➡️ to see examples of some seriously sketchy Steinlen kitties.

Shown here: Théophile Steinlen, "Tournée du Chat Noir," 1896, and "Cats," 19th-20th century.
